The course is carefully structured to support your work-in-progress with video, text and downloads over six phases of development. 1. The Inspiration and Preparation Phase
Where motivation meets method. Ten game-changing lessons to take at your own pace to get prepared to write your first draft. We’ll share with you our highly effective one-hour-a-day method for writing fiction. A complete mindset reboot and cleanse.
All successful novels take headspace and use the muscle of the heart too. You’ll discover how to create space and get your heart pumping alongside the writing skills you need to achieve your ambitions with our ‘Big Hack’. There’s never a perfect time to write a novel. That’s why the best time to write a novel is now. We’ll show you how. (You’ll find all of these ten lessons waiting for you ready to enjoy before the drip-fed daily lessons begin when you sign up.)
2. The Construction Phase
An intense two-week period to get the groundwork prepared for writing your novel. You’ll receive a lesson a day to help you pace yourself and you’ll start to write when you have everything you need to begin, no more, no less. We’ll start to develop the story outline with the main character, the all-essential character flaw or circumstantial problem, and look at how your setting and cast serve your story. You’ll discover the one-word secret to creating drama – all the key plot drivers you need when you are learning to write a great novel.
You’ll prepare a simple but deadly one-page plan for your first novel that packs the elements really essential to readers, publishers and agents. You’ll meet your writing coach to work through the outline together, get creative inspiration for development, check the plot, receive constructive feedback on your plan and get a big thumbs up to start writing a story you love.
3. The Swim Phase
We’ll advise you to write slowly as you develop the vital organs of your story and show you some novel writing techniques to build your confidence on the page.
We’ll consider who is telling the story, from what perspective and how, the matter of ‘voice’ and how the setting can drive the events unfolding in your plot.
You’ll be introduced to some of the methods of the all-time great writers and learn new techniques to make your writing sharper and smarter. As so many of our writers say, you’ll be surprised at how easy and painless your progress beyond the first 10,000 words has been.
4. The Heat Phase
Fierce and fabulous lessons from the frontline of an award-winning author’s real-life writing method to power you through the middle of your novel. Now you’re really cooking, knowing what’s working, staying on track with your daily writing and checking in with your writing coach to stay motivated.
Your daily word count will increase as you get deeper into the story and raise the stakes in your plot to head towards the midpoint, going from the old world of your main character’s problems into a new world of opportunity.
Here’s where you fall in love with your story.
5. The Enlightenment Phase
Game-changing insights daily to power you through your writing. We’ll examine the nuts and bolts of one of the greatest award-winning novels of all time to consider how to be both poet and programmer as you craft your novel.
We’ll show you the master strokes to fulfil your early promises to the reader with deft and economical touches that give those ‘a-ha’ moments. We’ll banish backstory and overwriting in favour of creating scintillating detail that advances the story line by line. You’ll see for yourself on the page that you’re becoming a good writer and mastering the craft skills.
6. The Home Phase
Here’s where it all comes together with the last 20 lessons combining the key elements of storytelling: theme, character, dramatic irony, narrative arc, and sub-plots working in harmony for a satisfying ending.
We’ll ensure your story plays out with a grand finale by finding your secret storytelling code. Your writer coach and our community will be cheering you all the way to The End. We’ll advise you on next steps and whizz you a course certificate to celebrate your achievement. You’ll have a novel done and can then move on to the next step in the process towards publication at your own pace, and after a well-deserved break and celebration.
You’ll be guided how to choose your writing coach in your course before you get started writing. You will be able to work side-by-side with a bestselling author as your mentor to ask them about their writing life and discover techniques appropriate to you and your story.
