AI and Contemporary Fiction: How to Write About AI

Join S.J. Bennett and Aditi Surana, two AI experts, for a chance to gain insight into current AI research, where it might go in the future, and how to consider weaving AI into your stories in terms of character or plot elements—if your story is near-future speculative, it may require a different approach than something that is far future and more science fantasy. Contemporary stories that aren’t in the science fiction genre may also increasingly need to consider how AI might be referenced.

S.J. Bennett is a research associate in data justice and global ethical futures in public policy at The Alan Turing Institute, and co-organizes the AI Ethics and Society group in Edinburgh. Aditi Surana is an early-stage researcher and PhD candidate at Design Informatics and the School of Design at the Edinburgh College of Arts. She is also a Marie Curie Fellow within the EU’s Innovative Training ‘DCODE’ Network. Her PhD focuses on examining human-centered and design-led approaches to AI governance and policy frameworks.

In this session, we’ll get into some of the opportunities and thorny ethics issues. Join us for an interesting discussion and a chance to ask your own questions about using AI in fiction!

Note: while we will probably touch on some of the anxieties around AI in publishing and some of the current discussions around copyright, the main focus will be on interweaving AI/AGI into the stories themselves as a character or plot element.

The Novelry Graduate on Getting Published

Carla Jenkins debut novel will be published this May by Trapeze, an imprint of Hachette, who scooped the rights for a ‘powerful and engrossing’ debut novel by The Novelry graduate Carla Jenkins in a two-book deal from Madeleine Milburn at Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency, who saw off competition from nine other agents to represent Carla after submission by The Novelry.

Fifty Minutes will publish in hardback in May 2024, with her follow-up novel due to publish in 2025.

Carla says: ‘From the initial idea for my novel to the point of getting agent representation, The Novelry were on hand with support and advice. The dream was always to get an agent and so to receive interest from several was mind-blowing—to have Madeleine Milburn within that list was more than I could have hoped for. I’m thrilled!’
