Should I Take a Creative Writing Course?

Most serious writers take courses or apprenticeships with published authors.

Stephen King learnt from John Gould. Ian McEwan, Kazuo Ishiguro, Anne Enright, Gillian Flynn and Tracy Chevalier all took classes. The list is long. Few are the authors who didn't study their craft.

What is a Creative Writing Course?

A creative writing course offers the aspiring author or budding writer of fiction a grounding in the craft skills required to tell a story in a way that engages the reader to keep turning the pages. That's it in a nutshell.

But not all creative writing courses are created equal!

Sure, there are some basic principles to communication in the fiction form but no course or tutor should pretend there are rules. As with most art forms, the principles are there to be experimented with, innovated upon and at times broken. That's why it's important not only to get advice from accomplished, published writers, it's also important that the author tutor understands what you are seeking to achieve. Whether that's commercial (volume sales in the bookstore), or literary fame (awards listings) or simply to enjoy the sense of achievement of completion.

Writing a book is the best way to learn how to write a book, but a great writing course with a supportive and caring author tutor can help you fast-track that process to make it more satisfying and enjoyable, and even get you a literary agent.

Here's what you should look for in a creative writing course:

Personal Care

Find a course that takes time to listen to what you want to achieve with your story.

Published Authors

Ensure you get to work with a published author you respect of your choice

Choose a writing course with a support group and tutor sessions available in your time zone.

Onward Path

A course with an onwards journey towards you getting a literary agent and being published.

Here's What to Avoid When Choosing a Creative Writing Course:

  • Workshopping. Creative writing courses that 'workshop' your writing at first draft, asking fellow beginners to critique your work. It is horrendously time consuming and can go horribly wrong. It's the tutors who should be giving you feedback on your work. Only share work at second draft and beyond.
  • Courses that are selective. Be careful. It may be flattering to be 'chosen', but the pre-selection allows for course leaders to play favourites and you might be assigned to a second-tier group tutor upon arrival and feel like you've been given the dunce's cap. Not good for your confidence. Join a writing group where everyone is equal.
  • A course that doesn't complete your novel. Most writers abandon their novels. Don't let that. be you. Choose a course that commits to seeing you all the way through to a happy ending. (And doesn't kick your backside out the door when the course ends.)
  • A course like any other. Ensure the course you choose has original and inspiring content written by a published author who has sold books and won awards, not just text and downloads. Look for a custom tutoring element so you can understand how to apply the lessons to your story.
  • Spending a lot of money! Don't make a huge investment, make a wise investment. Ensure your investment includes feedback and an onwards path so that your skills and story, once honed, can rise and rise.
